A cuirassier originally used pistols as their primary weapon, but by the Napoleonic Wars, the sword or sabre had become his primary weapon, with pistols relegated to a secondary function. Cuirassiers had the role of shock cavalry, with their use in battle expanded after the success Napoleon had in fielding them.
