While British redcoats did most of the fighting in the War of 1812, Canadian militia and allied Indian warriors proved to be a vital part of Canada's defence. The Lower Canada Sedentary Militia was a citizen army, composed of men between 16 and 60, who were required to be available for military service in certain circumstances during the War of 1812. These militia were organized into districts and were a key part of defending Lower Canada against American invasion.
