The Spanish Civil War was a conflict from 1936 to 1939 between the left-wing Republican government and the right-wing Nationalist rebels, led by General Francisco Franco. It erupted after a military coup failed to immediately overthrow the democratically elected republic and escalated into a brutal war, supported by foreign powers like Germany and Italy for the Nationalists and the Soviet Union for the Republicans. The war ended with a Nationalist victory and Franco becoming dictator.
