Trench Raiders were used by both sides to secure prisoners or intelligence, or to sow terror and confusion. Armed with knives or clubs to silently enter enemy trenches and not raise the alarm, sidearms were carried for emergencies and grenades to cause chaos upon retreating back to their own lines.
