The 10th Mountain Division, formed in 1943, was the U.S. Army's only division dedicated to alpine warfare during World War II. Inspired by the success of Finnish ski troops in the Winter War, the division was trained to fight in the mountains of Italy. They faced difficult terrain and German defences, and although successful in their attacks, they suffered heavy casualties.
