The Royal Danish Army was founded in 1614, and forms the land-based branch of the Danish Armed Forces, together with the Danish Home Guard.
In recent years, the army has transitioned from its traditional role of anti-invasion defence, instead focusing on out of area operations.
The defence of Greenland is the responsibility of the Kingdom of Denmark; the government of Greenland does not have control of military or foreign affairs. The Joint Arctic Command is the Danish military branch responsible for Greenland, and the Danish military has personnel based at several locations in Greenland and patrols its waters and skies.
