Pioneers were specialised combat engineers attached directly to infantry regiments. The pioneers marched at the head of the column to physically hack a path forward where needed. If a locked gate blocked a vital chokepoint, or an enemy had felled trees to create a tangled barrier known as an abatis, the pioneers were sent in under heavy fire to clear the way.
