The Indian Army made a major contribution during World War I, deploying large numbers of divisions and independent brigades across the European, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and African theatres. Over one million Indian troops served overseas; of these, around 62,000 were killed and 67,000 wounded, with total deaths reaching at least 74,187.
Indian forces fought against the German Empire on the Western Front, where at the First Battle of Ypres, Khudadad Khan became the first Indian to receive the Victoria Cross. Indian troops were also deployed to Egypt, Gallipoli Campaign, German East Africa, and Mesopotamia, where nearly 700,000 served against the Ottoman Empire.
