The Chindits, known officially as the Long Range Penetration Groups, were special operations units of the British and Indian armies which saw action in 19431944 during the Burma Campaign of World War II. British Army Brigadier Orde Charles Wingate formed the Chindits for raiding operations against the Imperial Japanese Army, especially long-range penetration: attacking Japanese troops, facilities and lines of communication deep behind Japanese lines. Each man carried more than 72 pounds (33 kg) of equipment, which was proportionally more than the mules carrying the support weapons and other stores. This included a personal weapon, ammunition, grenades, a machete or Gurkha kukri knife, seven days' rations, groundsheet, change of uniform and other assorted items.
